Bike Shop Interns - Summer 2010

Two full-time 2 month positions for summer 2010 – Toronto [Update: the time span will now be from August to September. Sorry for the confusion]

The Community Bicycle Network (CBN) is a Toronto non-profit organization whose mission is to promote cycling through bicycle education, recycling bicycles and facilitating community bike initiatives. We provide recycled bikes for sale; regular bike workshops; bike and trailer rentals; and affordable access to tools and parts. CBN also donates bicycles and expertise to individuals and groups with limited access to affordable transportation.

The Bike Shop Interns will work in the bike shop for the bike season, learning valuable job and life skills, while also contributing to CBN's bike refurbishing and education efforts. CBN staff will mentor the interns in developing problem solving skills, gaining a better understanding of simple mechanical systems, acquiring job skills, and studying bike safety.

The Bike Shop Interns will also assist the regular staff in the Bike Shop in support of CBN’s Earn-a-Bike partnership, which provides volunteer youth with mechanical skills training and eventually their own bike in reward for their volunteer time. Through this initiative, the interns will help the trainers to lead youth through bike mechanics workshops. It's preferable that the interns a bike mechanics workshop such as Charlie's Freewheels Workshops, the Bicycle Assembly and Maintenance Course or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Assist staff in general bike shop labour.
  • Assist staff in basic mechanical duties, including disassembling bikes for recycling, sorting and cleaning parts, and other mechanic duties when required.
  • Help with bike donation collection by making pick-ups on bike.
  • Assist staff in making sales with the public.
  • Responding to inquiries from the public.
  • Participate in mentoring feedback sessions and workshops.

Qualifications

  • Strong willingness to learn and passion for bicycles.
  • Basic bike mechanic skills learned at Charlie's Freewheels, BAM or equivalent.
  • Physically able to ride a bicycle with a trailer attached.
  • Preference for those at-risk and disadvantaged.
  • Be a student who is returning to school in the fall of this year.
  • Be between the ages of 15-24, up to 29 if the person has a disability.
  • Eligible to work in Canada.
